3 Types Of Cockroaches In The House

There are 4000 odd species of cockroach in the world. Only three, however, are known to invade our homes and workplaces and cause problems. There are a few other species that are similar, but can be found in the home a little less often. Every cockroach has its own specific features & all like somewhat different things. Nonetheless they are all pests & can cause great health risks & damage to us and the people we love.

Distinguishing these cockroaches could be the first step in iradication & control. It is quite simple and can aid in extermination techniques. Here are the 3 main common cockroaches.

American Cockroach

The American cockroach can grow up to 25mm in length. It has a reddish brown color & single stripe on the head. These roaches love the taste of liquor and can often be found in bars or at home in case you had a party & didn’t clean up quickly. They have a life span of up to 1 and half years. Their incubation period is from 6 to 8 weeks.

German Cockroach

The German cockroach boast of a brownish or tan color, and 2 lighter stripes on the back of its head. It can grow up to 15mm in length. It is probably the fastest breeding among its cousins, giving birth to around 30 to 40 nymphs with an incubation period of 30 days. That is relatively fast, seeing one of them can multiply to 30,000 in just a year. They can live for around 6 months.

Oriental Cockroach

Among these three, the Oriental cockroach is probably the biggest. It grows approximately 25mm in length. They are a dark brown or black color with a shiny body & move more slowly than the other cockroaches. They are often called the “water bug” because they like to live in dark, damp areas. They are most probably found in cellars or damp mulch. Incubation can last 2 months with about 15 eggs hatching & they can each live for up to 2 years.
