Prior to the Seventies, the vacation destination known as Cancun was out in the country. Things got interesting when the Mexican government made the decision to create a resort that would appeal to international tourists. The plan was to create the resort and then offer great travel deals to potential visitors.
Now, less than 40 years later there are well over 100 hotels along a several-mile stretch called the Hotel Zone. The town is now a major city with an urban downtown, major shopping areas and world-class dining. The competitive market in this slow economy is motivating the resort operators to offer some very attractive Cancun travel deals.
Do be aware that the Yucatan Peninsula can be rather humid, with high heat in the summertime. Next time I go, I’ll look hard at planning the trip for the months between late Fall and Spring.
